Welcome to the editorial guide for the EU Space Programme website (eu-space.europa.eu). This guide is written for the editorial and webmaster teams that publish content on the EU Space portal — the single destination that brings together Copernicus, Galileo / EGNOS, GOVSATCOM, IRIS², SST and the wider Space Programme communications.

Key terms

The guide uses a small number of Drupal terms. These plain-language definitions will help you recognise them in the editing interface:

  • Content type — the kind of page being created, such as News or Event.
  • Node — Drupal’s technical name for a page or content item. This guide normally uses page.
  • Content block — a reusable section added to the page body. Drupal calls this a paragraph.
  • Paragraph bundle — Drupal’s technical name for a type of content block, such as a Hero Content Section or Toggle Content Row. This guide normally uses content block type.
  • Taxonomy — a controlled set of categories used to organise and filter content.
  • Entity reference — a field used to select existing content or media instead of creating a copy.
  • Teaser — the title, image, and summary used when content appears on a card.
  • Moderation state — the content’s current workflow stage: Draft, Needs Review, Published, or Unpublished.

Note - on the technical stack

The site runs on Drupal 11 with the Bootstrap 5 contrib base theme and a custom defis_space_program sub-theme. ECL design tokens, icons, mega-menu and footer are vendored in through the custom defis_space_program_ecl_blocks and defis_space_program_ecl_icon_widget modules — The two OpenEuropa modules actually in use are oe_authentication (EU Login SSO) and oe_webtools (Webtools chart / map / social embeds). The site follows the EC Web Guide and targets WCAG 2.1 AA.

The site is English-only at this stage. Automated translation capabilities are being explored for future consideration.
